Flat-woven rugs have been woven in homes for a long time and are available throughout Iran. Some of these are Kelim, flat-woven wool rugs with the typical "Kelim slit". Others are Sumak, flat-woven rugs with an embroidered appearance on the front and loose ends on the back. Originally, Kelims and Sumaks were multifunctional, used in front of doors, to cover camels or horses, or as tent roofs, to cover dining tables or to sleep on. These rugs have been well maintained or refurbished.
