About the Book: The almanac of this artists' association, published in 1912, is considered one of the most important manifestos of modern art in Europe: In 1911, the Blue Rider was formed in Munich on the initiative of Wassily Kandinsky, the pioneer of purely abstract painting, and Franz Marc. It was the second major association of avant-garde artists after the artists' group Die Brücke in Dresden, and it was to inscribe itself into the grand book of myths and legends of modernity, chapter Expressionism. This introduction traces their short but momentous history.

Biography: Hajo Düchting (1949–2017) studied Art History, Philosophy and Archaeology in Munich, where he received his doctorate in 1981 for his work on Robert Delaunay's "Window Pictures." He subsequently held teaching positions and guest professorships at the Universities of Munich, Kassel, Leipzig, Saarbrücken, and Mainz. He published numerous works on modern art, color theory, and art education. Published by TASCHEN: Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, and Georges Seurat.
