The Gabbeh originates from the Fars province around Shiraz and is handmade by Gashgai and Lori nomads. Originally, this type of carpet served as a sleeping mat, as the higher pile provides extra warmth. Characteristic is the uneven, hand-spun and lanolin-containing wool, which gives the carpet a slightly grainy, lively surface texture. The design is usually kept simple; if motifs occur, they show stylized representations from the everyday life of the nomads such as animals, plants or people. The coloring ranges from natural cream, brown and gray tones to strong plant-dyed red, yellow, green and blue nuances.
