This handmade Gabbeh carpet comes from the Fars province around Shiraz and is traditionally made by Gashgai and Lori nomads. Originally, Gabbeh carpets served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides extra warmth. The use of hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the surface a characteristic, slightly grainy structure and makes the carpet soft and comfortable at the same time. The colors are derived from natural plant dyes and range from classic cream, brown, and gray tones to strong red, yellow, green, and blue tones. Most Gabbehs are simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads can be found, such as animals, plants, or people.
