Sofa Guide: How do I find the right sofa for me?

Inevitably the centerpiece in all of our living rooms is the sofa – Our sanctuary for relaxing, reading, watching movies and letting the soul dangle. The selection of different shapes, sizes, colors and upholstery materials seems almost endless. In any case, when deciding to buy a new sofa, it is important to ask yourself the question: What do I expect from my sofa? What will I primarily use it for and who are the other users?

First of all, it is advisable to measure your own room and the surrounding furniture, in short, to include the proportions of the entire room: What is the maximum width / depth the sofa can be? How does the seat height relate to any existing armchairs and / or chairs in the immediate vicinity? The same applies to the height of the backrest – In short: find a folding ruler and take measurements wherever possible. Incidentally, a comfortable seating area on a sofa for one person is calculated at approx. 60-80cm.

You should also keep in mind that your sofa only gets its true expression through the right accessories such as rugs, coffee tables and floor or table lamps

Cocoli-Styling Tip: Place your sofa, whether a three-seater or corner sofa, in the center of your room with at least one meter distance from the wall and thus let it enter into a dialogue with the room. This way you can walk around the sofa - try it out and admire how much airier and more dynamic your interior looks.

Have you carefully measured the room in which the sofa is to be placed? Perfect. Now ask yourself the question of what the sofa will mainly be used for and how many people will usually be on it at the same time. Keep in mind the 60-80cm you should calculate per person, as well as the preferred sitting position. Would you rather sit upright to chat with friends and family? Then short seat surfaces and a seat height above 43cm are ideally suited for you.

Are you more of a lounger type who likes to put their feet up? Then low seat heights, daybeds and deep seats will particularly suit you.

Another important aspect that gives your sofa additional practicality is a sleep function.

Even if your home does not have a separate guest room, you can create a comfortable bed for your guests in no time with a sofa bed.

Once you have found your ideal format and the right size for your needs, it is all about choosing a suitable cover for the centerpiece of your living room

At COCOLI, we believe in the power of synthetic fiber covers such as polyester or polyamide. When finished to a high standard, these feel pleasantly soft on the skin and are also extremely robust and easy to care for, which is why they are also ideal for households with small children and / or pets.

Which sofa upholstery is the best?

There are different types of sofa upholstery, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The best upholstery depends on your personal preferences and needs. Here are some options:

• Innerspring: Innerspring cushions are durable and offer good support. They retain their shape well and are ideal for people who sit on the sofa for long periods. However, innerspring cushions can be more expensive than other options and can also be heavier.

• Foam: Foam cushions are soft and comfortable. They adapt well to the body and are often a more cost-effective option than innerspring cushions. However, they can lose their shape over time and provide less support.

• Polyester: Polyester cushions are generally an inexpensive option. They are lightweight and can often be machine washed. However, they can become flat over time and provide less support.

• Down and feathers: Down and feather cushions are soft and comfortable. They offer good support and can adapt well to the body. However, they can become flat over time and often require regular fluffing to maintain their shape.

It is also important to note that the quality of the upholstery plays an important role. High-quality foam padding, for example, can be better than inferior spring core upholstery.

Which sofa covers are available?

Here are some of the most common sofa covers:

• Cotton covers: Cotton covers are soft, comfortable and breathable. They are easy to clean and available in various colors and patterns.

• Linen covers: Linen covers are hard-wearing, durable and have a natural texture. They are also breathable and can be found in various colors and patterns.

• Velvet covers: Velvet covers give the sofa a luxurious look and feel. They are soft, comfortable and have a shiny surface. However, they are harder to clean and more sensitive to wear and tear.

• Leather covers: Leather covers are durable, easy to care for and have an elegant look. However, they are more expensive than other options and can be damaged by sunlight and moisture.

• Polyester covers: Polyester covers are soft, durable and available in various colors and patterns. They are also easy to clean and more resistant to stains than other materials.

• Stretch covers: Stretch covers adapt perfectly to the shape of the sofa and are available in various colors. They are also easy to clean and can be removed if you want to change the look of the sofa.

COCOLI Tip: When choosing a cover, it is important to think about how you will use the sofa. If it will be used often or in a household with children, polyester covers are more resistant, easier to clean, and usually have less pilling or fuzzing and are more light-resistant than natural fibers.
