Gabbeh rugs are traditionally made by the Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh rugs their characteristic, slightly grainy surface structure. Many models are kept in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while bold colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are produced with vegetable dyes. Most Gabbehs are simply designed; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads. Animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, as well as plants and people, are frequently depicted.
