Gabbeh rugs are traditionally made by Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives them a characteristic, slightly grainy surface structure. Many Gabbeh rugs are kept in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while bold colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created using vegetable dyes. The designs are mostly simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads can be found, including animals, plants, and people.
