The well-known Danish designer Niels Otto Møller was born in Aarhus in 1920. After completing his cabinetmaking apprenticeship in 1939 and studying design at the Aarhus School of Design, he founded his own furniture production company, JL Møllers Møbelfabrik, in 1944. His first well-known chair, the No. 1 Chair from 1946, was the beginning of a lifelong career in furniture design. Møller's characteristic designs, including the sculptural chairs No. 55 and No. 71 from 1951, are characterized by high-quality materials and curved shapes. With the growth of the company, Møllers Møbelfabrik began exporting to Germany and the USA in 1952. The company received the Danish Furniture Industry's Furniture Prize in 1981 for the combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern furniture production. Niels Otto Møller left behind an impressive legacy of chair and armchair designs, which is continued by his sons Jorgen Hernik Møller and Jens Ole Møller.
