Gabbeh rugs are made by the Gashgai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides warmth. The uneven, hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh a typical grainy surface structure and makes it pleasantly soft. Many rugs have natural cream, brown, and gray tones. The bold colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created using vegetable dyes. Most Gabbehs are simple; when motifs appear, they show stylized patterns from the everyday life of the nomads, such as animals, plants, and people.
