This Gabbeh rug originates from the Fars province around Shiraz and is traditionally handcrafted by the Gashgai and Lori nomads. Originally, Gabbeh rugs were used as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides warmth. The uneven, hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the rug its characteristic grainy structure and makes it pleasantly soft. The colors – from natural cream, brown, and gray tones to vibrant red, yellow, green, and blue – are created using vegetable dyes. Many Gabbehs are simple, but when motifs appear, they show stylized scenes from the everyday life of the nomads: animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, plants, and people.
