About the book: This volume introduces the life and work of Caravaggio, the notorious rebel of the Baroque art world. Through his dramatic use of color, light and shadow and spectacular pictorial inventions, he is considered today one of the most influential painters of all time.

Biography: Gilles Lambert (1928–2011) commuted between Rome and his birthplace Paris throughout his life due to his love for Italy. He translated numerous works about the Seicento from Italian. Together with André Labarthe, he founded the magazine Constellation in the 1950s, later working for Figaro Littéraire and for Paris Match. Lambert wrote monographs on Auguste Mariette and Caravaggio.
Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer and exhibition critic. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU Museum as well as the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art magazines such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Prix Élie Faure for his publications in 1981. His publications with TASCHEN include Dalí – The Paintings, Matisse as well as Erotica Universalis.
