Born in Berlin in 1920, Helmut Newton completed his apprenticeship with the legendary photographer Yva and turned to fashion, portrait, and nude photography. At the age of only 18, he had to flee abroad from the Nazis, but Newton never truly left Berlin. After his career took off in Paris in the 1960s, he returned regularly to his hometown and realized important photo series for the magazines Constanze, Adam, Vogue, Condé Nast's Traveler, ZEITmagazin, Männer Vogue, Max and the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin as well as his own magazine Helmut Newton's Illustrated. In 1979, the newly founded German Vogue commissioned him to walk in the footsteps of his youth and particularly capture the aspect of fashion. The resulting portfolio Berlin, Berlin! also provided the title for the exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Helmut Newton Foundation. This book shows Newton's iconic Berlin photographs as well as many unknown shots from the 1930s to the 2000s: night owls in the city's trendy clubs and restaurants, nude shots in the old Berlin pensions of his youth, as well as the Berlin film scene with Hanna Schygulla and Wim Wenders at the Berlin Wall, John Malkovich and David Bowie. In October 2003, just a few months before his death, Newton transferred large parts of his archive to his new foundation, which is housed in the former Landwehrkasino next to the Zoologischer Garten station - the very station from which he hurriedly left Berlin in the winter of 1938. With this publication, a circle closes in the history of his extraordinary life and work. Helmut Newton. Berlin, Berlin
