This handmade Gabbeh rug originates from the Fars province around Shiraz and is traditionally crafted by Gashgai and Lori nomads. Originally, Gabbeh rugs were used as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The use of hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the surface a characteristic, slightly grainy structure and makes the rug both soft and comfortable. The colors are created using natural vegetable dyes and range from classic cream, brown, and gray tones to vibrant red, yellow, green, and blue tones. Most Gabbehs are plain, but occasionally stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads can be found, such as animals, plants, or people.
