Stone Age – Ancient Castles of Europe: Frédéric Chaubin takes the reader on an extraordinary journey through Europe, documenting over 200 castles from 21 countries. The collection showcases the history and architecture of medieval fortresses, whose robust construction and functionality are precursors to Brutalism.

Created after five years of intensive travel and research, Chaubin photographed the castles with an analog Linhof large-format camera. In addition to impressive images, the book includes a map and an essay that places the structures in their historical context from the High Middle Ages to the 15th century.

As a photographic study of decay and permanence, Stone Age illustrates how these structures continue to exert a special fascination to this day.

About the Author: Frédéric Chaubin was editor-in-chief of the French magazine Citizen K for 20 years. Since 2000, he has regularly published architectural works, combining text and photography, and presented them in exhibitions and lectures. After his successful project CCCP, he dedicated himself to medieval architecture and published Stone Age in 2021 by TASCHEN (416 pages, multilingual hardcover edition, ISBN 9783836585019).
