Gabbeh rug wool beige

Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashgai and Lori nomads in the province of Fars around Shiraz. Originally, they served as a sleeping mat, as their higher pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the Gabbeh its characteristic grainy surface texture. Many carpets show natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are kept simple; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the daily lives of the nomads. Common depictions are animals such as goats, camels, and dogs, as well as plants and people.
