Gabbeh rugs are traditionally made by Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides extra warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives them a characteristic, slightly grainy surface texture. Many Gabbeh rugs are in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. The designs are mostly simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the daily lives of the nomads can be found, including animals, plants, and people.
