Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashgai and Lori nomads in the province of Fars around Shiraz. Originally, they served as bedding, as their higher pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the Gabbeh its characteristic grainy surface texture. Many carpets show natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while strong colors like red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are kept simple; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads. Frequent depictions include animals such as goats, camels, and dogs, as well as plants and people.
