Gabbeh rug wool grey

Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides extra warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh carpets their characteristic, slightly grainy surface texture. Many models are in natural cream, brown and grey tones, while strong colors like red, yellow, green and blue are produced with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are simply designed; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads. Animals such as goats, camels or dogs, as well as plants and people, are often depicted.
