Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashghai and Lori nomads in the province of Fars around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides extra warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh carpets their characteristic, slightly granular surface texture. Many models are in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are simply designed; when patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the daily life of the nomads. Animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, as well as plants and people, are often depicted.
