Gabbeh rugs are traditionally made by Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as bedding, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives them a characteristic, slightly grainy surface texture. Many Gabbeh rugs are in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors like red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. The designs are usually simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads can be found, including animals, plants, and people.
