Gabbeh Rug Wool Red

Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashghai and Lori nomads in the province of Fars around Shiraz. Originally, they served as bedding, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh carpets their characteristic, slightly granular surface texture. Many models are in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are simply designed; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads. Animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, as well as plants and people, are often depicted.
