About the book: Helmut Newton did not distinguish compositionally or stylistically between work for magazines and assignments from advertising clients. Ironicially, he called himself "A Gun for Hire" – and that was also the title of June Newton's legendary book about his commercial photography, which is now being reissued in a revised edition by the Helmut Newton Foundation.

Biography: Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, known for his work for Vogue in the 1970s. His striking images are characterized by ambiguous situations, dramatic lighting, and unconventional composition. He received numerous awards, including the French Order of Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Matthias Harder studied Art History, Classical Archaeology and Philosophy and has been Chief Curator since 2004, and Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin since 2019. He regularly publishes articles in art magazines, books and exhibition catalogs.

June Newton (1923–2021), active as a photographer under the name Alice Springs, portrayed celebrities worldwide such as William S. Burroughs, Catherine Deneuve, Yves Saint Laurent and Nicole Kidman. Her works appeared, among others, in Vanity Fair, Interview, Elle and Vogue.
