The Oscar-winning French actor-director Jacques Tati (1907-1982), one of the most innovative and original filmmakers of his time, was as precise as he was critical an observer of everyday life. His naive characters, hopelessly overwhelmed by modern society, whom he always played himself – the unlucky postman François or the clumsy Monsieur Hulot – show in a way that is as funny as it is profound, how class differences and customs, architecture and technology influence the way people interact with each other.
Unlike Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, with whom he was often compared, Tati created his very own everyday worlds, with imaginative visual and sound gags, to demonstrate the absurd causes of many comical life situations. As a former mime, he knew how to make the audience laugh without words. In his films, he used gestures, facial expressions, costumes, props, sets, sounds, music – everything, just no dialogues – and thereby achieved a maximum level of comedy.
