The Gashgai are Turkish-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in Southwest Iran. Their Kilims are among the traditional, double-sided flat-woven textiles made of wool. Typical is the so-called slit tapestry, where small slits are created in the weft during color changes. The carpets are richly decorated with classic Gashgai motifs such as rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star patterns. Strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, which give the carpets a lively and diverse effect.
