The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their Kilims belong to the traditional, double-sided flat weaves made of wool. Characteristic is the so-called slit weave, where small slits are created in the weft during color changes. The carpets are richly decorated with classic Gashgai motifs such as rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star patterns. Vibrant colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, which give the carpets a lively and expressive effect.
