The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their Kelims are double-sided, flat wool carpets, which are created by the characteristic slit weave. Small slits form in the weft, where the colors change. Typical patterns of these carpets are rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star motifs. Strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, which give the carpets their vibrant and traditional appearance.
