The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their kilims are double-sided, flat wool carpets, created by the characteristic slit weave. This results in small slits in the weft where the colors change. Typical patterns of these carpets are rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star motifs. For the design, strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used, which give the carpets their lively and traditional appearance.
