About the Book: Towards the end of his life, confined to a wheelchair by illness, Henri Matisse completely reinvented himself with colorful paper cutouts. His gouaches découpées, initially met with smiles, broke free from the narrow confines of painting and were to influence generations of artists. This new edition of our award-winning XXL edition places Matisse's paper cutouts in a detailed biographical context. With rare photographs of the artist by Henri Cartier-Bresson and F. W. Murnau, as well as texts by Matisse, the poets Louis Aragon, Henri Michaux, and Pierre Reverdy, and Matisse's son-in-law Georges Duthuit.

Biography: Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer, and exhibition critic. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU Museum as well as the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He managed art magazines such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Prix Élie Faure in 1981 for his publications. His publications at TASCHEN include Dalí – The Paintings, Matisse, and Erotica Universalis. Xavier-Gilles Néret teaches Philosophy of Art and Design at École Duperré Paris and at the Sorbonne. He works at the intersection of art, philosophy, and poetry. His publications include works on Bernard Saby, Daisuke Ichiba, Pakito Bolino, Anne van der Linden, and a theoretical essay on Graphzines. He lives and works in Paris.
