The book, published by TASCHEN in 2017, is dedicated to the work of Paul Outerbridge (1896–1958), one of the most significant pioneers of color photography. Known for his sensual advertising shots and color-nuanced nude photography, he used the complex Tri-Color Carbro technique to create a special image depth and surface texture. His goal was the creation of "artificial paradises" – perfectly formed compositions with a surreal touch.
About the book: The monograph illuminates Paul Outerbridge's career from being New York's highest-paid advertising photographer to his withdrawal to Hollywood in the 1940s, triggered by scandals surrounding his erotic photographs. Cubist-influenced still lifes, magazine shoots, provocative nudes, and his engagements with avant-garde photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Man Ray are shown. The work highlights Outerbridge's ability to transform everyday objects into abstract compositions and his pioneering spirit in the artistic and commercial use of color photography.
About the author(s): Carol McCusker is Curator of Photography at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Elaine Dines-Cox is a freelance museum curator in San Francisco and published the first cataloged overview of Outerbridge's work in 1981. Manfred Heiting is an internationally recognized designer, curator, and photography expert, living in Malibu and Brussels, and has published, among others, The Soviet Photobook and The Japanese Photobook.
The book was published in 2017 by TASCHEN Verlag as a multilingual paperback edition. With ISBN 9783836564564 (ISBN-10: 3836564564), it comprises 256 pages and combines high-quality content in a compact, handy format.
