Rizbaf Gabbeh Rug Wool Yellow

Gabbeh rugs are traditionally made by the Gashgai and Lori nomads in the province of Fars around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their higher pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the Gabbeh its characteristic granular surface texture. Many rugs show natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while strong colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are kept simple; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads. Common depictions are animals such as goats, camels, and dogs, as well as plants and people.
