This Gabbeh carpet originates from the Fars province around Shiraz and is traditionally handcrafted by the Gashgai and Lori nomads. Originally, Gabbeh carpets were used as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides warmth. The uneven, hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the carpet its characteristic grainy texture and makes it pleasantly soft. The colors – from natural cream, brown, and gray tones to strong red, yellow, green, and blue – are created using plant dyes. Many Gabbehs are simple, but when motifs appear, they show stylized scenes from the daily lives of the nomads: animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, plants, and people.

The pieces are knotted and woven by talented knotters, some of whom still live as nomads and produce them in traditional handwork on wooden looms.
