Turkmen carpets are knotted by the Turkic-speaking nomadic tribe of the same name, which lives in northeastern Iran. The Turkmen are divided into many smaller tribes. Each tribe has its own pattern, but they all have in common that they are knotted in octagonal shapes called "Gül". The stylized Gül is a kind of family crest for each Turkmen nomadic tribe. The predominant color is red, especially in very dark, almost brown tones.
