Gabbeh rugs are made by Gashgai and Lori nomads in Fars province, around Shiraz. The rugs were originally used for sleeping, as they have a higher pile for warmth. The uneven, hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh a typical grainy surface texture. Many rugs have natural cream, brown, and grey tones. The red, yellow, green, and blue colors are made with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are plain; when motifs are shown, they are stylized patterns from the daily life of the nomads. Goats, camels, dogs, plants, and people are common motifs.
