Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashgai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as a sleeping mat, as their higher pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the Gabbeh its characteristic grainy surface texture. Many carpets display natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are kept simple; when patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the daily lives of the nomads. Common depictions include animals such as goats, camels, and dogs, as well as plants and people.
