Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives them a characteristic, slightly grainy surface texture. Many Gabbeh carpets are in natural cream, brown, and grey tones, while vibrant colors like red, yellow, green, and blue are created using plant dyes. The designs are mostly simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads can be found, including animals, plants, and people.
