Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh carpets their characteristic, slightly grainy surface texture. Many models are in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while strong colors like red, yellow, green, and blue are produced with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs have a simple design; if patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the daily life of the nomads. Animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, as well as plants and people, are frequently depicted.
