Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813), typeface designer, punchcutter, and official printer to the Duke of Parma, was a gifted engraver and obsessive perfectionist who even post-treated his own printing ink to achieve a perfect print image. However, he inscribed himself in the history of book art with his elegant classicist serif typefaces, which are still used today in countless variations and reinterpretations. Bodoni's typefaces exhibit an unparalleled degree of technical sophistication and are of timeless beauty. The Manuale tipografico, published posthumously in 1818, a specimen and textbook of typography and the summary of an immense life's work, represents one of the greatest typographic achievements in history.
