About the Book: Eight years after the capitulation of Nazi Germany, the photographer Josef Heinrich Darchinger began his photographic journey through West Germany. In color and black and white, Darchinger's images offer a glimpse into a country in the throes of reconstruction.

Biography: Josef Heinrich Darchinger (1925-2013) worked as a freelance photojournalist from 1952 onwards. From the mid-1960s, Darchinger's images regularly appeared in renowned German print media. For 30 years, Darchinger, as Bonn correspondent for Der Spiegel and Die Zeit, shaped their federal reporting. In addition, he created exhibitions and photo books โ€“ for example, on Helmut Schmidt, Willy Brandt, Richard von Weizsรคcker, and Heinrich Bรถll. Darchinger received numerous honors, including the renowned Erich Salomon Prize from the German Society for Photography.
Klaus Honnef was an honorary professor of photo theory at the Kassel Academy of Art. He was co-organizer of documenta 5 and documenta 6 in Kassel and has curated more than 500 exhibitions worldwide. He has written numerous books, including at TASCHEN "Contemporary Art," "Andy Warhol," and "Pop Art."
Frank Darchinger, born in 1949 in Bonn, studied English and German studies. From 1977, he worked as a photojournalist. In his endeavor to process and make his father's work accessible to the public, the design and organization of photo exhibitions and photo books became one of his focal points. Today, he works as a freelance photographer in Bonn.
