The Gashghai or Qashqai are Turkish-speaking nomadic tribes who live primarily in the province of Fars, especially around the city of Shiraz in southwestern Iran. In addition to carpets, they also produce a variety of flat weaves made using the typical slit-tapestry technique. This means that slits in the kilim are part of the manufacturing process, especially at color changes. This technique determines the structure of the motifs, which are predominantly geometric - typical kilim patterns. The nomads do not adhere to a predetermined pattern or template. They weave from memory and according to personal taste. The result is a wide variety of patterns and colors, based solely on the individual taste and tradition of the weavers. An advantage of the slit-kilim technique is that these flat weaves can be used on both sides.
