The Gashghai or Qashqai are Turkish-speaking nomadic tribes who primarily live in the province of Fars, especially around the city of Shiraz in southwestern Iran. In addition to carpets, they also produce a variety of flatweaves made using the typical slit-tapestry technique. This means that slits in the kilim are part of the manufacturing process, especially at color changes. This technique dictates the structure of the motifs, which are predominantly geometric – typical kilim patterns. The nomads do not adhere to a predefined pattern or template. They weave from memory and according to personal taste. The result is a wide variety of patterns and colors that are based solely on the individual taste and tradition of the weavers. An advantage of the slit-kilim technique is that these flatweaves are usable on both sides.
