The Gashgai are Turkish-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in Southwest Iran. Their Kelims are double-sided, flat wool carpets, created by the characteristic slit weaving technique. Small slits form in the weft, where the colors change. Typical patterns of these carpets are rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star motifs. For the design, strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used, which give the carpets their vibrant and traditional appearance.
