The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their Kelims are reversible, flat wool carpets, which are created by the characteristic slit weave. This creates small slits in the weft where the colors change. Typical patterns of these carpets are rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star motifs. Strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, which give the carpets their lively and traditional appeal.
