The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their kilims are reversible, flat wool carpets that are created by the characteristic slit weave. Small slits form in the weft, where the colors change. Typical patterns of these carpets are rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star motifs. For the design, strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used, which give the carpets their lively and traditional appeal.
