About the book: American sociologist and photographer Lewis W. Hine is considered a pioneer of committed, social documentary photography. His pictures of steelworkers in Pittsburgh, immigrants on Ellis Island, child labor in American industry and agriculture, and the construction workers of the Empire State Building have become central icons of the 20th century.

Biography: American photographer and sociologist Lewis W. Hine (1874-1940) was trained as an educator in Chicago and New York before founding his photo studio in 1912. He was one of the first to use the camera as a tool for social reform and worked as a photographer for the National Child Labor Committee, the Red Cross, and the National Research Project of the Works Progress Administration. His photographs were instrumental in changing child labor laws in the United States.
Peter Walther has published numerous works on literary, photographic, and contemporary history topics, including books on Goethe, Fontane, Thomas Mann, Hans Fallada, and writers in World War I, as well as several illustrated works with historical color photographs.
