About the Book: From Nicéphore Niépce's 1827 photograph of a roof, created with an eight-hour exposure, to Nick Ut's horror of napalm against civilians – all 50 photographs in this collection have defined eras, written history, or touched upon something so fundamentally human that they resonated worldwide. Each photo is described and analyzed in detail, revealing the history of the medium, as well as its social and artistic impact.

Biography: Hans-Michael Koetzle, born in 1953, lives as a freelance author and journalist in Munich. He has published numerous titles on the history and aesthetics of photography. His most important books include Die Zeitschrift twen (1995), Photo Icons (2001), Das Lexikon der Fotografen (2002), René Burri: Fotografien (2004), Fotografen A-Z (2011), and Dr. Paul Wolff & Tritschler (2019).
