This handmade Gabbeh rug comes from the Fars province around Shiraz and is traditionally made by Gashgai and Lori nomads. Originally, Gabbeh rugs served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The use of hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the surface a characteristic, slightly granular structure and at the same time makes the rug soft and comfortable. The colors are created by natural plant dyes and range from classic cream, brown, and gray tones to bold red, yellow, green, and blue tones. Most Gabbehs are simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the everyday life of nomads can be found, such as animals, plants, or people.
