This handmade Gabbeh rug comes from the Fars province around Shiraz and is traditionally crafted by Gashghai and Lori nomads. Originally, Gabbeh rugs served as sleeping mats, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The use of hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives the surface a characteristic, slightly grainy texture and makes the rug soft and comfortable at the same time. The colors are created using natural plant dyes and range from classic natural tones to strong shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. Most Gabbehs are simple, but occasionally stylized motifs from the daily lives of the nomads can be found, such as animals, plants, or people.
