About the book: Henri Rousseau claimed that he had "no teacher but nature." Only in his late forties did the retired customs officer begin to paint. His seemingly naive paintings of exotic plants and animals were initially ridiculed by the public, but found enthusiastic approval among avant-garde artists like Picasso, the Surrealists, and Kandinsky. This comprehensive introduction shows the development of this late bloomer and unusual hero of modernism.
Biography: Cornelia Stabenow was born in Bamberg and wrote her dissertation on Rousseau's jungle paintings. She worked as an art historian from 1982 until her death in 1990.
