The TASCHEN edition of Theuerdank presents the adventures of the knight Theuerdank and his companion Ehrenhold: the courtship of Maria of Burgundy, heroic battles, and perilous journeys – based on the "true life story" of Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519).
The work was published in 1508 and contains 118 artistic, gold-embellished woodcuts by Hans Burgkmair the Elder, Hans Schäufelein, and Leonhard Beck. The specially designed "Theuerdank type" with its distinctive "elephant trunks" gives the book its unmistakable character.
The edition reproduces a rare hand-colored original from the Bavarian State Library Munich and supplements it with an essay by Stephan Füssel, excerpts from Melchior Pfinzing's Clavis, modern retellings, and commented analyses of the narrative strategies and historical backgrounds.
The book was published on October 1, 2018, by TASCHEN Verlag, comprises 398 pages, and is available in German. The hardcover edition measures 17 × 3.9 × 24 cm.
