About the book: This collection of 1,000 photographs from the years 1839 to 1939 documents a whole century of excitement. It contains every titillating pose that artists of each era could imagine. Selected from the Uwe Scheid collection, an excellent treasure trove of suggestive imagery, these black-and-white and hand-colored images reveal as much about the development of nude photography as a genre as they do about forbidden fantasies, sexual morality, and societal taboos.

Biography: Hans-Michael Koetzle, born in 1953, lives as a freelance author and journalist in Munich. He has published numerous titles on the history and aesthetics of photography. His most important books include Die Zeitschrift twen (1995), Photo Icons (2001), Das Lexikon der Fotografen (2002), René Burri: Fotografien (2004), Fotografen A-Z (2011), and Dr. Paul Wolff & Tritschler (2019). Uwe Scheid (1944-2000) collected artistic and erotic nude photographs primarily from the early days of photography and the 1920s and 1930s. Scheid was a member of the German Society for Photography, the European Society for the History of Photography, the Club Daguerre, and the Daguerreian Society.
